Peter LePort, MD
Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors

Dr. LePort is a general surgeon in private practice in Orange County, California. He received his M.D. degree and surgical training in Brooklyn, New York at Downstate Medical College, where he was an Assistant Professor of Surgery for two years prior to moving to California. He is a member of the Faculty of the American College of Surgeons, and the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons. While in medical school, Dr. LePort became interested in childhood education. He studied the writings of Dr. Maria Montessori and educated his children by the Montessori Method until they completed fourth grade. He helped develop an Upper Elementary Program for his children through the rest of their education.

LePort Schools is the culmination of Dr. LePort's efforts to provide children with a superior education, one in which they develop strong basic skills, master challenging content, and learn to think independently. From a small homeschool with three students, LePort Schools has grown to five locations in Orange County that now caters to almost 500 students. Dr. LePort's dedicated team of administrators, teachers, and educational experts have worked together to develop and deliver an exceptional curriculum in a stimulating, nurturing environment, earning LePort Schools its reputation as a superior place of learning.


 

Mrs. Edith Hanlon
Principal, Carden Academy

Mrs. Hanlon received her B .S. in Sociology and her Teaching Credential from the University of Southern California in 1957. Upon graduation, Mrs. Hanlon was employed by the Pasadena City School District as an elementary teacher.

The family moved to Newport Beach in 1968. With her family raised, she was eager to return to teaching. She was familiar with the Carden Curriculum and appreciated its continuity and structure. She began her association with Carden at Carden Mesa in 1978 where she taught for 3 years. She joined the staff at Carden Academy of Huntington Beach in 1981 where she taught Kindergarten.

In 1983 she accepted the position of Principal, At Carden Academy of Huntington Beach, a position she enjoys to this date. She respects the traditional teachings of Carden that provide the students with a well rounded education. She works with teachers, students and parents to be certain that each student is reaching his/her potential.

Mrs. Hanlon’s greatest joy is when the alumni return to share their successes in high school, college, and the business world. They are very grateful to Carden for a strong foundation.

 

   

Vanessa Stewart
Head of School

Ms Stewart holds an undergraduate degree in Elementary education (B.Ed.) from the University of Greenwich. London, England. and a Masters degree in Special Educational Needs from Exeter University, England.  She has been a teacher for over 20 years, specializing in Language Arts and Behavior management.  Before joining Carden Academy, Vanessa was Deputy Principal for a Special Education School in Derbyshire, England, where her focus was curriculum development and engagement for pupils with emotional and behavioral needs.

 

   

Colleen Hazard
Administrative Coordinator/Grade 6 Teacher

Ms. Hazard has been a teacher at Carden Academy since 2005. She has managed two roles as a teacher and administrative coordinator since 2008. Ms Hazard attended the University of CA, Irvine where she completed her Bachelors of Science in Social Ecology. She went onto National University where she earned her Masters Degree in Educational Administration. Currently, Ms. Hazard holds an Elementary Teaching Credential and a Preliminary Administrative Credential.

Ms. Hazard began her career in 1990, she taught for the Santa Ana Unified School District and later taught for the Downey Unified School District. Here, she became the director of two consecutive summer school programs. Ms. Hazard began teaching at Carden Academy in 2005, where her daughter also attends. She enjoys educating the “whole child,” as well as her role as administrator.  In both roles she is committed to delivering an exceptional educational experience. She enjoys moulding and shaping the hearts and minds of children. She loves the challenges associated with every aspect of the educational process and realizes that a good education is founded on a solid partnership between the school and the parents.
In her spare time, Ms. Hazard enjoys spending time with family and friends. She loves taking long walks on the beach and tent camping at National Parks in California.
